ABSTRACT
This study examines effective library support for distance education programs; strategies for equalizing access to library resources for on-campus students and distance education learners. Specifically, the study evaluates the level of awareness of library services by distance learners, investigates whether library services and programmes are offered to distance learners and ascertains whether the information needs of distance learners are adequately provided for. The study employs the survey descriptive research design. A total of 259 responses were validated from the survey. The study adopted the Churchmanian Theory of Knowledge Management Systems. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings reveals that the level of awareness of library services by distance learners is high. Furthermore, library services and programmes is offered to distance learners. The study recommends that academic librarians must endeavor to implement comprehensive information literacy programmes to overcome the challenge of awareness of library services. As put by Abubakar (2010) information literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use library information. Ultimately, information literate people are those who have learned how to learn.
